Polka dots and bright colors for this sweet Jewish wedding will inspire you to no end! Sara and Avidan were married at the Calhoun Beach Club in Minnesota.
Together they tell us their wedding story!
What’s your story?
We met at a party in Washington, DC. Sara was excited to meet someone with a sense of humor. Avidan was happy to have someone laugh at his jokes. Fast forward three years, we spent some time coming up with random baking things to talk about until one of us finally got the nerve to ask the other one out.
Avidan: For the proposal, I made a bunch of posters of artwork (Sara studied art history in college and likes going to art museums) that represented dates we’d been on, interests we had, places we lived, etc. and hung them up in the hallway of Sara’s apartment. Then, when she came home, I was dressed in a suit and acted like a museum docent explaining what each poster represented in our relationship. Finally, we went into her room where I had hung up posters symbolic of our first date, and I proposed.
Thankfully, she said yes!
What made you chose your venue{s}?
I really wanted a place with natural light- so many of the venues we looked at were these dark ballrooms. I figured that we were having a daytime wedding in the summer-there needed to be sunshine! The Calhoun Beach Club had a lot of light, was beautiful and had all the spaces we would need for the various parts of the wedding. Plus it was two miles from my parent’s house which meant the inevitable run back for something we forgot would be quick!
What inspired your wedding day outfits?
Sara: I wanted to be a ballerina and did not want anything shiny. Which is why I went for the light floaty skirt and lacy top.
Avidan: All I knew for sure was I didn’t want a tuxedo. I originally was thinking something old-school and classy like a three piece suit, but was talked down. My main goal was to look good on my wedding day, and the rest was less important. And Sara’s brother and his wife approved everything before I bought it.
What inspired your wedding decor?
We wanted bright and cheery, but also simple. We picked flowers in colors that would really pop, but then were really thoughtful about where we put them. Also I love polka-dots so I snuck a few in here and there for fun.
What was your favorite part of the day?
Sara: Probably the end of the day: all the stressful stuff was over and we were just dancing and hanging out with our friends.
Avidan: Aside from the part where we actually got married, my favorite part was watching all of our friends entertain us during the dancing.
Do you have advice for engaged couples still in the planning process?
Sara: Figure out which parts of the day are important to you and fight for your vision there, then let everything else go.
Avidan: At some point in the planning, one or both of you is going to cry. It’s completely normal; it’s a high-stress and emotional time.
Did you have any Do it Yourself {DIY} projects?
I had helped enough friends with DIY presents for their weddings, that any time the possibility of one came up, I always stopped and asked myself if this was a project I wanted to spend three hours or a week of evenings on. Nothing passed that test.
