Brittany & Andrew’s Jewish Southern Style Wedding

Oh my y’all! We have a Southern Jewish wedding that’s going to blow your mind.

Chicken and waffles were not forgotten either!

Brittany and Andrew got married at Lake Lure Inn in North Carolina. It is an amazing looking place.

We had a chance to hear from Brittany about her wedding. Let’s hear her story!
First of all it was so important to us to find the perfect venue: a location close to family, but far enough away that they would have to stay on site. A place where everyone could get away, come together and celebrate with new friends and family. An intimate space that could provide lodging, an assortment of venues, and beautiful scenery.

We originally were looking in the Blowing Rock area where we got engaged, but decided at the last minute to swing by a place in Lake Lure. It was love at first sight. The 1927 Lake Lure Inn was exactly what were looking for and the incredible staff there, especially our wedding coordinator Patrick, made the entire planning process as easy as possible.

Tell us about the wedding events!
It was also important to us to create a weekend that was very “us.” We served one of our favorite meals, Chicken & Waffles, for the Shabbat dinner and it was a huge hit.

We performed a few songs on Saturday night after a beachside havdalah service. We wrote our own vows. We chose to be married by a close Jewish friend instead of a rabbi. We worked hard to plan a weekend that balanced Jewish traditions and Southern traditions with the traditions we had already established through our six years of dating. What resulted was an absolutely incredible weekend, so full of love, family, friends and fun.

We had a three day wedding, beginning with a Shabbat dinner. Andrew gave the most beautiful speech before he recited the Eshet Chayil to me for the first time and blew all of us away. Guests were able to enjoy the sights and get to know each other throughout the next day. On Saturday night, we had a beach party complete with a bonfire, smores, and a havdalah service. Andrew sang the song he proposed to me with and together we concluded the night with Moon River. On Sunday, while our guests treated themselves to spa time or visited the Biltmore Estate, the wedding party got ready. The weather was absolutely perfect.

The chuppah we were married under was designed by our officiant and my father; round on the top with four sides. It was designed to not only be our chuppah for our wedding day, but also to be enjoyed for years to come as our sukkah for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. (Andrew and I just reconstructed it yesterday- Sukkot starts tomorrow.)

We created a wedding ceremony that probably didn’t fit with any singular denomination; it was our own. As the ceremony began, I walked around Andrew three times, he walked around me three times and we walked around each other once. We said the traditional prayers and then recited our own vows. Since it was an outdoor ceremony, we kept it short and sweet (which I’m sure our guests appreciated!)

What advice do you have for future brides-to-be?
Create an event that reflects your personalties. People are attending because they love you and want to celebrate you! We chose to have hot pepper jelly favors because that is our favorite kind. We took the Jewish traditions we loved and ignored the ones we felt uncomfortable with (no bedeken for me.) We hunted for months for all of the vintage details to match our venue. And all of the planning and stress was absolutely worth it.

Most importantly, once your weekend has arrived, relax and enjoy it!

Thank you Brittany for sharing your wedding with us. Mazel tov to you both.
